Blogging engines don't allow a quick way to change categories, or to add tags to many posts at the same time, so managing your old posts can be a lengthy process.

A friend of mine, Marco De Sanctis, had to add tags to all his old posts and to reorganize the categories of his blog, so he built a small tool that retrieves all the posts via MetaWeblog API, and allow to select many posts, and add tags or categories in batch.

More information about this wonderful tool, named "Blog Manager", on Marco's blog: A tool to manage your blog categories and Technorati Tags.

Blog Manager is available both in Italian and English, and support for other languages is coming soon.

You can download the tool and also the code (with the solution in VS2008 format) is available.

I just wish I could use this to go back and Tag all of my old posts in Subtext - but since we derive tags based on the Tag Microformat, I'm guessing that's not possible.

Perhaps we should think about adding the ability to Tag posts in the more traditional way as well as using the Microformat parsing. So our Tag table might need a new attribute to determine if the entity was auto-tagged (by Microformat), or manually tagged by the user. Then when rebuilding the blog's tags via parsing, we'd just need to be sure not to remove any manually added tags.

Hmm... perhaps a new feature for Subtext 2.0+... :)

You can do it...
The tool parses the html of the post, using regex to find the tags.
And adds them in the same format.
The tool was developed with Subtext as test bed :)
I'm going to do it as soon as I have a few spare time, and reorganize the categories a bit, as well.

Schweet!

So does it automatically add new tags (if a post didn't have any) to the end of the post's body content?

I'm definately going to give this tool a whirl. Thanks for the tip Simo!

Yep, it adds them and the template is configurable.
If you use the default one, it's added as if WLW added it.
¡¡¡¡ SWEET !!!!
